The Pre-K attached to FLHS is one of the opportunities that makes this school so special, as it not only affords the opportunity for young children to have a fun and safe environment to learn, but it also gives students who are interested in early childhood education a chance to get real hands-on experience.

However, running such an operation does not come without its stresses. Because of the unvaccinated status of all the three and four year olds who are a part of the student-run daycare, students who take child development have been tasked with creating a COVID-safe learning environment that still gives the young students a chance to learn and interact with their classmates.

One way students have done this is by generating lessons that limit physical contact as much as possible. They also created different strategies to teach the kids to keep their masks on.

Unfortunately, as much as teachers and students try to maintain the norms, positive COVID tests and COVID exposure is an everyday reality at FLHS, even at the Pre-K.

The relationship between Ludlowe and its Pre-K creates a unique situation: although the pre-school is attached to Ludlowe, the children are not interacting or with the student body in the same capacity. This poses the question: should the daycare operate with unique COVID guidelines to keep teachers and students more safe? Or are the current guidelines sufficient?

This also poses the question, should there be changes made to the Child Development course to prepare students for the COVID environment? These changes will prepare students for the challenges they will face if they continue to take higher levels of Child Development in their high school career.

Despite challenging circumstances, the daycare has been able to succeed and thrive with minimal outbreaks or shutdowns along the way. This consequently has become a testament to how the Child Development classes are taught and run at Ludlowe.
