Dear Falcons,
Every once in a while, an event occurs in the world that has massive implications on a global scale. Sometimes the significance of these events can get lost in the world of a high school student who is just trying to juggle their school work, practice/rehearsal schedule, and get in some volunteer or work hours. The ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israel is one of these events, and years from now this moment in time will likely be referred to in historical accounts as a major turning point in the Middle East and world politics.
I strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to process these important events, become educated on the background, and recognize the significance. By learning from others’ perspectives, we can foster empathy and better understand how others are affected – even if you feel your world is not affected.
I personally love the study of politics, history, religion and conflict. However, you don’t have to like these things to recognize how we must stand up for people when basic human rights are violated. Terrorism, regardless of its origin or justification, is an act that we must unequivocally denounce. It is our duty to stand together against any form of violence that jeopardizes the lives, safety, and well-being of individuals on both sides.
Promoting peace means engaging in open and respectful dialogue. We must create spaces where different perspectives can be shared, listened to, and understood. By fostering an environment that encourages peaceful discussions, we can challenge our own biases and learn from one another, ultimately fostering a culture of mutual respect and acceptance. Think of the first two letters from our Falcon Core Values: FELLOWSHIP and ACCEPTANCE. They certainly apply here.
I applaud Prospect in bringing this topic forward and encouraging your participation on this important topic. Please read the entries with an open mind and know that your responsible responses, reaction, and input are welcomed.
Go Falcons – and peace to us all.
-Dr. Hatzis
