As the school affiliated fall sport seasons come to a close, the FCIAC competitions have begun. For some sports, like cross country, FCIACs have already occurred.
For those who are unfamiliar, FCIAC stands for Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference. Unlike the typical meets and games, where Ludlowe is against one other school, in FCIACs, athletes are ranked and compete against all other schools in the conference.
The process of getting to the conference will look different for every sport. For cross country, everyone on the team is able to attend the meet, however athletes are separated into Varsity and Junior Varsity sections within the conference. For sports like field hockey and soccer, FCIACs isn’t just one game, instead it’s a series of games. If your team loses, you are knocked out of the competition and if you win you move on.
I participate in a fall sport myself, cross country, and FCIACs is definitely one of the most exciting times of the season. Athletes are able to demonstrate all the skills they have acquired throughout the fall and showcase it before the season ends. Students are also able to meet athletes from all around Fairfield County. We get to see how other teams have grown throughout the season as well.
After the FCIAC conference, some sports are able to progress even more and compete at the state-wide level if they qualify.
FCIACs is a meet or game that shows the growth and sportsmanship of individual athletes and teams. It demonstrates why athletes do the sport they love. It can also be a bittersweet time, knowing the season is coming to a close.
FCIACs don’t just occur for fall sports! Athletes from all sports get to compete every season, making it something to look forward to all year round.
