Looks like the Falcons were correct! Followers of the Prospect Instagram last week voted on a poll for Super Bowl Sunday about who they wanted to win. An overwhelming 81% voted for the Eagles!
This past Sunday the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX. The game took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. The epic Caesars Superdome hosted the game for its 8th time. The first half was dominated by the Eagles. Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts, scored the first points of the night. Hurts ran one of the Eagles favorite plays, a “tush push” that took place on the 1 yard line. The extra point by kicker Jake Elliot was a success and the first quarter had ended 7-0. Then in the beginning of the second quarter, Elliot made a whopping 48 yard field goal, advancing the Eagles lead to 10-0. A few short minutes later, Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean had an amazing interception and ran it 38 yards back to score. Elliot made another extra point to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead. Then with less than 2 minutes left in the second quarter, Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown caught a 12 yard pass from Hurts, with Elliot yet again making the extra point. The score before halftime was a surprising 24-0.
This year’s halftime performance was by rapper Kendrick Lamar. Lamar’s performance featured special musical guest SZA and the two sang two songs together, “All the Stars” and “Luther”. There was also a dance cameo from retired tennis player, Serena Williams. Lamar started the performance by saying “The revolution bout to be televised… you got the right time but the wrong guy”. This set the stage for Lamar’s use of political symbolism that would take place throughout the whole performance. Samuel L. Jackson made a cameo too. He appeared multiple times throughout the performance dressed up as Uncle Sam and gave Lamar critiques or praises, depending on the previous song performance. Jackson told Lamar he was being “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto”. Lamar made use of additional symbolism by having all of his dancers in either red, white or blue. At one point they created a human American flag that was split down the middle. Lamar’s performance has sparked controversy, some saying it was the best halftime show they’ve seen, due to all the symbolism and others say it was boring and not very well done.
The third quarter didn’t get any action until the end. With a little over 5 minutes left, Elliot kicked a field goal to increase the Eagles score to 27-0. Then three minutes later, wide receiver Devonta Smith caught a 46 yard touchdown pass from Hurts, and with Elliot making the extra point the score was 34-0. Then, with less than a minute left in the quarter, Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught a 24 yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. To try and get as many points as possible the Chiefs attempted a 2 point conversion, but it failed. The score going into the fourth quarter was 34-6. The Eagles didn’t have any touchdowns in the fourth quarter but Elliot did kick 2 field goals, one from 48 yards and the other from 50 yards, putting the Eagles at 40-6 with eight minutes left in the game. It wasn’t until the very end that the Chiefs finally picked up some momentum. With under three minutes left, Chief’s wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, caught a 7 yard pass from Mahomes and then wide receiver, Juston Watson, caught a 2 yard pass from Mahomes. This completed 2 point attempt, made the score 40-14. They continued that momentum. About a minute later, Worthy caught a 50 yard pass from Mahomes for a touchdown and then again Hopkins caught a pass from Mahomes for 2 more points. Even though the Chiefs were the team predicted to win and they tried their best to make a comeback they still came up short. The final score was 40-22.
