While the program isn’t well known, Ludlowe and Warde share co-op rugby teams for both boys and girls. The boys play in the local 15s bracket, while the girls are working towards it while currently playing 7s. Presently, due to the lack of interest in the sport, the girls team doesn’t have enough people to play 15s, even though that is the goal.
While rugby has a reputation for being dangerous and difficult to play, it is actually very fun when done properly. With correct form, contact sports can be safe. Rugby has stricter rules about tackling than football, so it doesn’t require padding, only mouthguards. Once you understand the rules, it’s more fun than difficult.
Girls rugby has a reputation for being rough and masculine. However, this is completely untrue, as femininity is not tied to activities, and being strong is not something to be ashamed of. Girls are completely able to play full contact sports, and it should be encouraged. As previously mentioned, injuries are avoidable with proper form, and stereotypes shouldn’t chase people away from a sport.
The Ludlowe/Warde co-op girls team (Lady Pegasi) is looking for more participants, and more funding. Since the sport doesn’t have many people yet, the athletic department cannot fund many of their necessities. Most of the team budget goes to renting fields, referees and transportation, so things like rugby balls, training equipment, and uniforms are not available. The team is currently using uniforms from the Fairfield Rugby Club, as they do not have the funding to get their own. More people would bring the team more attention, and therefore the funding they need. To assist in this cause, the team is running a can collection drive, which you can donate to until April 5th.
New players are always appreciated, and total beginners are completely welcome. Coaches are completely willing to help someone start from scratch, so if you know someone who might enjoy a sport that combines soccer and American football, introduce them to rugby. Donations to the can drives (empty cans or cash/venmo) can be dropped off from 9-11 AM on April 5th at Warde or Ludlowe.
