With their second season underway, Unrivaled, the professional women’s basketball league, has been taking the media by storm and capturing the attention of thousands.
Last year, former UConn graduates and WNBA players, Brianna Stewart and Naphessa Collier started a 3v3 league for other professional players that takes place during the WNBA off season. The main goal was to offer a league that players can participate in during the off season and make good money, but not necessarily have to go overseas.
All games are played in the new Sephora Arena in Miami, which was expanded after last season to include a second practice court, as well as more seating, now for up to 1,000 fans. This season, Unrivaled will also make a trip up to Philadelphia, where two games will be played in the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The game starts with three, seven minute quarters. Then, for the fourth quarter, they use an “Elam Ending”. This means there is a point value they need to get to in order to win. 11 points are added to the leading teams score, and the first team to reach that number is the winner. For example, if the winning team has a score of 50 by the end of the third quarter, the score one of the two teams needs to get to in order to win is 61. Each team is composed of six players and one head coach, most of which come from WNBA sidelines. This season, Unrivaled has expanded from six to eight teams which has allowed more players to sign. This year, there are 54 players signed, including six players in the development pool, who can fill in spots on any team if any players get injured.
Unrivaled has also been getting lots of attention due to its salaries, specifically the salaries players are making compared to what they make playing in the WNBA. According to Front Office Sports, the average salary for an unrivaled player in its inaugural season was $220,000, with no players making less than six figures. Compare that to the WNBA, where the average salary is around $150,000, with the minimum being $66,000. It has also been reported that salaries have increased for its second season due to the success of the league in its first year and the large revenue it raked in.
You can watch unrivaled on TNT, trutv and Max. Most games are played Friday-Monday, with two games in one night, one starting at 7:30 and the other around 8:45.
